POEME e-books, or a deep-dive into partner countries’ cultural heritage

After e-worksheets, e-books are the next step on POEME’s quest for discovering other countries’ heritage, be it digital, natural, tangible or intangible.

As the POEME project progresses, we see its other elements unfold and constantly enrich its outcome. E-books are the next step and the next challenge for the project’s partner countries, but also the project’s participants: teachers and students. In this article, we present e-books’ characteristics and advantages.

  1. E-books will combine various media and thus advance participants’ digital skills

E-books created in the POEME project will feature different media like videos, images, written texts, which will make them more interesting for the readers. E-books are a relatively new concept, and project’s participants aren’t formally trained to create this kind of material. However, these skills can be extremely useful in today’s technology-oriented world and the job market. They can also build educational readiness and mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 crisis, which was particularly severe in the educational sector.

During the creation process, teachers will be able to use e-books prepared by partner countries as examples and inspiration.

  1. E-books will be a step towards a better understanding of the young generation

The e-book creation process will give the teachers new digital skills which will bring them closer to the new generation in which their students are. They will also provide them with the tools to digitalize any learning material that they will be able to use in online learning, which will in consequence provide very needed support for the learners that are on the other side of the screen. The professors will also acquire the knowledge from a purely technical area which is the actual creation of the e-books. Teachers will get to know the techniques of e-book creation and easy-to-use software that will let them create and modify the files according to their vision.

  1. Learners will benefit from the e-book creation process by gaining digital skills and broadening their language skills

Although many learners are already familiar with and possess the set of basic digital skills, this experience will help them become more confident in using them, which is now becoming essential in a professional career. They will be able to use their newly-acquired competencies in any other project. The other benefit of POEME, which is just as important as digital skills, is language acquisition. Thanks to e-worksheets (you can read more about their advantages here) and e-books created in the POEME project, learners will broaden their knowledge about partner’s countries’ culture, traditions and history.

  1. E-books paired with an explanatory sheet will give the teachers useful instructions and inspiration for creating their own projects in the future

Along with e-books, partner countries will also participate in the preparation of an explanatory sheet that will list the good practices and useful resources. This document will also be a technical step-by-step explanation of e-books creation and will likely contain models that the teachers will be able to edit and reuse. It will also list the tools and easy software that the teachers will find very useful, even in their day-to-day professional life outside of the project.

E-books and an explanatory sheet will be an interesting alternative to more traditional ways of learning and a new teaching method for the professors. In our opinion, this way of learning a language will provide a full, multi-faceted view of a country, therefore helping the learners relate to it and find a common ground with its speakers, but also of the tools that are out there. We want to make e-book creation easier for everyone, and the learning process a pleasure!
